عرف أبو مقاتل السمرقندي بكتاب «العالم والمتعلم» الذي هو مجموع أجوبة الإمام الأغظم عن الأسئلة الموجهة إليه في باب العقيدة. ولكن رغم اشتهار الكتاب لم تُستوف ترجمة أبي مقاتل كما ينبغي، بل معظم المعلومات المنتشرة عنه كلام جارحيه الذين اتهموه بالكذب والوضع بأضعف ما وجد في أيديهم، مع جلالة أبي مقاتل في العلم والعبادة. وليست هناك –حسب معرفتي- ترجمة له تستوفي ذكر شيوخه والآخذين عنه، وتحلل طعون الطاعنين فيه. وإلى هذا تهدف المقالة، وبالله التوفيق.
