يعد باب الإرث أحد الأبواب التي تحظى بالإهتمام في الفقه الإسلامي، وقد اهتمّ به طلاب العلم درساً وتدريساً وبحثاً، قديماً وحديثاً، لما له من أهميّة بالغة تتعلّق بجانب النظام المالي للفرد والجماعة في الحياة وبعدها، بإعتبار أنّ هذا التقنين الشرعي ضمن للمكلف حقّ نفاذ تصرفه في المال بالوصية بعد موته في مقدار معيّن وضمن للأحياء من قرابة الميّت أن ينتفعوا بعده بالتركه، كما يبحث هذا الباب أيضاً في الكيفية التي ينتقل بها المال، لغرض إيصال الحقوق لأصحابها، وهي الغاية التي حثّ عليها الشرع من وراء تعليم الفرائض والندب لتعلّمها.
وأطلقوا على هذا العلم "علم المواريث" أو "علم الفرائض"، وهذا العلم يستمدّ مبادئه وأحكامه من القرآن الكريم الذي أجمل وفصّل، ثمّ من السنّة المطهرة التي تولّت بيان مجمله وتفسير مبهمه، والتي عليها أقوال الفقهاء في مسائل هذا الباب، فكان الغرض من هذه الدروس تسهيل تناول مسائله، فهو من الأبواب التي لا غنى للطالب عن فهمها، لكونها محلّ السؤال والإبتلاء.
