لقد نشأت القومية العربية كحدث تاريخي نتيجة تلاحم عوامل اجتماعية واقتصادية وسياسية في حوالي نهاية القرن التاسع عشر. وقد مثلت حركة طمحت إلى معالجة حالة جديدة أصبح فيها الوطن العربي كله هدف اختراق استعماري أوروبي. وحدث ذلك في وقت لم يعد يمكن الاعتماد على الدول الأجنبية جميعاً، أو أنها أصبحت دولاً حليفة على نحو فاتر. وترك العرب وحدهم تقريباً للدفاع عن أنفسهم وإيجاد استراتيجيا جديدة قادرة على كبح تعزيز الهيمنة الأوروبية.
وهكذا نشأ التصور بأن المحاولات السابقة التي سعت إلى نيل استقلال دول عربية معينة، افتقرت إلى تصور شامل وإطار تنظيمي مناسب يتجاوز الحدود المحلية. وبدعم من جيل طموح من مثقفي الطبقة الوسطى والنخب المهيمنة أصبحت فكرة الوحدة العربية خلال عقدين من الزمن سلاحاً قوياً هدد المصالح الراسخة للوجهاء من الطراز القديم والطراز القديم والتجار الكبار والإقطاعيين، ووصلت القومية العربية إلى ذروتها في عقد الخمسينات والستينات، وغيرت في أثناء ذلك نظرة جيل عربي برمته.
في هذا الإطار تأتي دراسة القومية العربية هذا وإن هذه الدراسة استدعت من الباحث هيكلة الظروف والتحولات التاريخية التي جعلت نشوءها ممكناً. وهكذا بات تصوره بأن التطورات الثقافية والاقتصادية والسياسية في القرن التاسع عشر تمثل بدايةً مهمة في خلق القومية العربية، واستدعى ذلك من الباحث إيرادها في رسم حدود دينامية هذه الحركة. وإزاء هذه الخلفية تمّ تقسيم الدراسة إلى ثلاث مراحل مستقلة: المرحلة الثقافية، والرحلة السياسية، والمرحلة الاجتماعية.
