"علم التاريخ العربي الحديث: الخطاب التاريخي والدولة الأمة" للدكتور يوسف الشويري ليس مجرد دراسة مباشرة للكتابات التاريخية العربية الحديثة، بل يقدم الكتاب قراءة جديدة للفكر العربي الحديث والمعاصر استناداً إلى دلائل حسيّة وإحالات لا يرقى إليها الشك، إذ لم يعد جائزاً بعد الآن الخوض في تصنيف هذا الفكر من دون إدراك الفارق بين الخطاب التاريخي في القرن التاسع عشر وخطاب القرن العشرين. وهذا يعني التوقف، مثلاً، عن الإصرار على القول إننا ما زلنا نطرح الأسئلة إياها منذ أن غزا نابليون أرض الكنانة وبلاد الشام، فالكتابة التي تستند إلى الوعي التاريخي تضع حدّاً لهّذه البلادة الذهنية التي تدّعي أن لا جديد تحت الشمس وتعتقد أن الفكر العربي قد دفن نفسه في حفرة لا قرار له فيها.
وليس الوعي التاريخي سلعة فكرية استهلاكية قد نختار الترويج لها حيناً، ثم نعمد الى انتقاء غيرها في لحظة من لحظات التجلي وشطحات النفس أو ما ينكشف للقلوب من أنوار الغيوب. إن وجودنا بأكمله أضحى رهن هذا الوعي ومدى عمقه وتجذّره واستمراريته. ويكمن هذا الوعي في إدراك الكائن البشري لعلاقته بذاته ومجتمعه وتفاعل كل منهما في عملية دينامية تؤدي إلى الترسّخ والتجاوز في آن معاً.
