يعتبر سفر أيوب علامة مميزة على طريق التطور التاريخي الذي شهدته الدراما الإلهية. ففي الوقت الذي كتب هذا السفر فيه، كان ثمة شواهد كثيرة على تناقض في صورة "يسهو"، وهي صورة لإله لا يعرف الاعتدال في انفعالات، ويكابد من الآلام أشدها بسبب افتقاره لهذا الاعتدال، ويسلم هو نفسه بأن الغضب والغيرة يأكلانه أكلاً، ومعرفته لهذه الحقيقة تؤلمه أيما إيلام. فقد جمع بنفسه البصيرة إلى الغباء، والرحمة إلى الشدة، والقدرة الخلقة إلى الروح التخريب. فقد كان كل شيء مخلفاً، وما كان لصفة من صفاته أن تقف عقبة في وجه الأخرى.
ومن كانت هذه حاله، فأما ألاّ تكون لديه واعية مفكرة، أو تكن قدرته على التفكير ضعيفة جداً، أو ظاهرة شبه عرضية، وهذه حال لا يمكن إلا أن توصف بالحياد الأخلاقي. أما كيف كانت أقوام "العهد القديم" تشعر حيال إلهها، فهذا يمكن معرفته من شهادة "الكتاب المقدس" وهو ليس الكاتب بصدده في هذا الشيء، بل هو معنى في بحثه هذا بالطريقة التي يستطيع بها إنسان معاصر ذو ثقافة مسيحية أن يأتلف مع الظلمة التي يتكشف عنها سفر أيوب، وما تتركه في نفسه من أثر.
يحاول الباحث التفاهم مع أفكار وتقاليد دينية معينة، ويقول بأنه سوف يلاقي تحدياً لكل من شعوره وفكره عند قراءته لهذه الأفكار وهذه التقاليد، لذا أباح لذاته العاطفية أن تتكلم لوصف ما يشعر به حين قراءته أسفار الكتاب المقدس، أو حين تذكره الانطباعات التي تلقاها عن عقائد الإيمان، بعبارة أخرى هو يكتب بحثه كما يكتب عالم بالكتاب المقدس، بل كما يكتب علماني وطبيب أتيحت له فرصة الرؤية العميقة في الحياة النفسية لكثير من الناس، وما يعبر عنه هو، قبل كل شيء، وجهة نظر خاصة به.
يعرف المؤلف بكتابه هذا فيقول: لسوف أحاول القيام بمثل هذا البحث، والتفاهم مع أفكار وتقاليد دينية معينة، وبما أنني سوف أتصدى للعوامل الإلهية، أشعر أني ملاق تحدياً لكل من شعوري وفكري ولذلك لن أكتب بطريقة موضوعية باردة ، بل سوف أبيح لذاتيتي العاطفية أن تتكلم إن كنت أريد أن أصف ما أشعر به حين أقرأ أسفار الكتاب المقدس، أو حين أتذكر الانطباعات التي تلقيتها عن عقائد الإيمان، وما أعبر عنه هو وجهة نظر خاصة بي، مع علمي بأني أنطق باسم كثيرين ممن كانت لهم خبرات مماثلة.
