(سفر أيوب) من العلامات الفارقة في التطور التاريخي للدراما الإلهية. ففي وقت كانت تتم فيه كتابة هذا السفر، كان ثمة الكثير من الشهادات التي تدل على تناقضات صورة "يهوه": هذا الإله اليهودي ذاته هو من اعترف بأن الحنق والغيرة كانا يأكلانه أكلاً، وكان إدراكه لهذه الحقيقة يؤبمه للغاية. لقد جمع يهوه ما بين نفاذ البصيرة والغباء، وما بين الرحمة والقسوة، وما بين القوى الخلاقة والقوى المدمرة. كان كل شيء موجوداً فيه، وما كانت واحدة من تلك الصفات عقبة في وجه الصفة الأخرى. ولا يمكن استيعاب مثل هذه الحالة، إلّا عندما لا يوجد لدى ملتقيها وعياً متفكراً بالمطلق، أو عندما تكون قدرته على التفكّر واهية، وهذه حال لا يسعنا إلّا أن نصفها بأنها غير أخلاقية.
لقد عرفنا كيف كان شعور أقوام "العهد القديم" حيال إلهاً من خلال شهادة "الكتاب المقدس"، وهو ما لستُ بصدده هنا، بل بصدد الطريقة التي يمكن بها لإنسان معاصر، أن يتآلف مع الظلمة الإلهية التي يتآلف مع الظلمة الإلهية التي يتكشّف عنها سفر أيوب، وتأثيرها عليه. سوف لن أقدم هنا تفسيراً ملطفاً وحذراً ومنصفاً لكل تفصيل، إنما سأقدم فقط رد فعل ذاتي عفوي. وبأسلوبي هذا، أتمنى أن أكون قد عبّرت عن المشاعر الممزقة التي ينتجها لدينا المشهد الصريح للقساوة والوحشية الإلهيتين.
