أحب عز الدين الحسني الجزائري مدينة دمشق, وتمنى أن يعيش فيها مطمئن البال, لا يعكر صفاء حياته شيء, غير أنه لم يستطع تحقيق أمنيته. لأن الأتراك كانوا يخافون أن تستغل أسرته الحرب العالمية الأولى لتحريض الناس على الثورة, فنفوها الى بروسة في تركية. وكان عز الدين آنذاك في الرابعة عشرة, يتلقى العلم في الكلية الإسلامية ببيروت, فترك الدراسة وصحب أسرته الى المنفى. وبعد أربع سنوات انتهت الحرب ورجعت الأسرة الى دمشق, وعاد عز الدين الى بيروت ليلتحق بالكلية العلمانية الإفرنسية, وهو يظن أن بلاده نالت استقلالها. وهذا الكتاب جاء ليتناول قصة حياة هذا البطل العربي الكبير من جميع جوانبها.
