هذا الديوان عددنا له قرابة مئتين وثمانين منظومة، يحتل فن المديح وما يتصل به من قريب أو بعيد نصف هذا المجموع ويتوزع نحو مائة مقطوعة على سائر الفنون بين الإخوانيّات والفخريّات والوجدانيّات والمطالع الخمرية والغزلية في ناحية، وبين الوصف والمراثي والهجاء في ناحية ثانية.
ولئن كنّا في تقديمنا لعدد من شروح ديوانه التي صدرت عن داري القلم والأرقم بن أبي الأرقم قد عنينا بإلقاء الضوء على حياة الشاعر وعصره وشخصيته والعوامل المؤثرة فيقها، ورافقناه بين نشأته الأولى في الكوفة والبادية وإتصاله بأعيان عصره وأمرائه في الشام وفلسطين وحلب ومصر، ثم العراق وفارس، فقد رأينا ان نخص هذا التقديم بعرض سريع في أغراضه وفنونه الشعرية البارزة.
