يتفق المؤرخون المعاصرون على أن أكثر الفترات التاريخية غموضاً في تاريخ نجد ؛ هي تلك الحقبة الزمنية الواقعة ما بين سقوط غمارة بني الأخيضر في نهاية القرن الخامس الهجري، إلى منتصف القرن التاريخ الهجري، لذلك فإن المقالات والبحوث التاريخية التي عنيت بتلك الفترة قليلة، ولعل أبلغ وصف لطبيعة البحث في تلك الفترة هو وصف الدكتور فهد الدامغ حين وصفه بأنه : "تصيد للشذرات المبعثرة، والإفادات المبددة، ثم الربط بينها وتحليلها واستجلاء دلالاتها واستخلاص نتائج منها".
وفي هذا الكتاب محاولة لفك شيء من غموض تلك الفترة من خلال البحث في أخبار البادية التي تسكن نجداً، والتي كانت تردها في تلك الحقبة، والسبب في اختيار أخبار البادية كموضوع للكتاب ليس فقط لكونها صاحبة الدور الأبرز في تلك الفترة، بل الأهم من ذلك إن المصادر التاريخية توفر الكثير من المعلومات عنها.
