يقدم هذا الكتاب الشعر العربي القديم حسب منهج حديث حيث يتناول عدداً من القصائد لكبار الشعراء من عصر ما قبل الإسلام حتى نهاية العصر العباسي، واضعاً كل قصيدة في سياقها التاريخي ومفسراً إياها بطريقة تأخذ في الاعتبار
كل أجزاء القصيدة والعلاقة بينها وتتقدم في آخر المطاف بكشف عن المغزى.
كذلك يدحض الكتاب فكرة متأصلة لدى بعض المستشرقين بأن القصيدة العربية مفككة لا تتصف بالانسجام. ويقوم بذلك بالإشارة، على سبيل المثال، إلى انتشار النظم الدائري فيها (والنظم الدائري أسلوب فني يرد في أدبيات متعددة يشبه ترتيب العقد، إذ به تُربط البداية بالنهاية ويكمن الجوهر في الوسط).
إنه نموذج لنقد حديث ينظر إلى التراث من منظور مقارن ويقدر من جديد إبداع الشعراء العرب.
د. ريموند فارين
ـ تخرج من كلية الآداب، جامعة بنسلفانيا في الولايات المتحدة.
ـ أقام في القاهرة زمناً ودرس اللغة العربية، ثم تابع دراستها في جامعة كاليفورنيا في بيركلي حيث تخصص في الشعر العربي القديم.
ـ في سنة 2006 نال شهادة الدكتوراه من الجامعة نفسها في مجال دراسات الشرق الأدنى. ومنذ ذلك الحين هو مقيم في الكويت حيث يدرّس الأدب العربي في الجامعة الأمريكية.
