إن الواقع الإسلامي المعاصر يطرح تساؤلات على صعيد الفكر لم تكن موجودة من قبل حول قضايا هامة كالجهاد والردّة والجزية، لا سيما وقد حلّت الدولة الحديثة محل الدولة الإسلامية. من هذا المنطلق وقع اختيار الباحث على موضوع حرية الاعتقاد في القرآن الكريم كمساهمته في الإجابة على بعض التساؤلات التي يطرحها المثقف المسلم قبل غيره.
وقد تمّ حصر البحث في القرآن الكريم حصراً منهجياً ينطلق من تصور الوحدة الموضوعية فيه، واشتماله على تقرير الأصول والمقاصد التي بني عليها الإسلام، لذا فإن هذا الحصر لا يحمل دلالة بخصوص السنة من حيث حجيتها وتأصيلها للأحكام، مع ملاحظة أن السنة لا تأتي بما يخالف القرآن لا سيما في موضوع هو في كليات الإسلام. وقد تمّ تقسيم البحث إلى تمهيد وفصلين وخاتمة.
خصّص الفصل الأول لتأصيل حربه الاعتقاد في القرآن. وقد ضمّ مبحثين، المبحث الأول: النصوص القرآنية المباشرة في تأصيل حرية الاعتقاد، المبحث الثاني: النصوص القرآنية غير المباشرة في تأصيل حرية الاعتقاد. أما الفصل الثاني فقد أفرده الباحث لقضايا تثير التساؤل حول حرية الاعتقاد وذلك ضمن ثلاثة مباحث فأوضح الإشكالية في كل منها، ودرسها من خلال القرآن الكريم، موضحاً مواقف المعاصرين من هذه القضايا، منتهياً في كل منها إلى تحديد العلاقة بينها وبين حرية الاعتقاد. أما الخاتمة فقد لخص فيها الباحث أهم نتائج بحثه.
