الكتاب بمضمونه يدور حول المواد الطبيعية، وخواصها العلاجية، استقى "الأندلسي" مواد كتابه من كتب الأقدمين، وخصوصاً كتابي "ديسقور يدوس" وجالينوس" في الأدوية المفردة. فقسمه إلى قسمين، الأول منها ذكر فيه جمل جاهر الأدوية وطعمها وقوامها بحسب تقسيم جالينوس، والقسم الثاني تضمن تقسيماً للأدوية إلى نباتية ومعدنية وحيوانية.
ولهذه الدراسة في علم الأدوية أهميتها العملية والعلمية إذ أنها تقدم مرجعاً للأغذية وكيفية التداوي بها لذلك عنى المحقق بضبط مادة الكتاب، فأصلح ما ورد فيه من الأخطاء، وفسر العديد من الألفاظ الغريبة، منها وغير العربية كالفارسية واليونانية واللاتينية مستعيناً بالكتب المتخصصة والمعاجم اللغوية.
