يقول الله تعالى في كتابه العزيز "قل لا أسألكم عليه أجراً إلا المودة في القربى". وروي مسلم والنسائي عن زيد بن أرقم قام رسول الله صلة الله عليه وسلم خطيباً فقال: "أذكركم الله في أهل بيتي ثلاثاً، فقيل لزيد بن أرقم من أهل البيت؟ قال: أهل البيت من حرم الصدقة بعده، قيل ومن هم، قال: أن علي آل عقيل وآل جعفر وآل عباس، ولهذا فإن الأمة الإسلامية تعظم آل بيت النبي لانتسابهم إلى رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم. وفي العراق قبائل وبيوتات تتصل أنسابها بآل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم.
وهذه البيوتات والقبائل هي موضوع هذا الكتاب الذي بين أيدينا والذي دونه بعد أن تقصى كل ما يتعلق بهذه الأنساب وأسماء البيوتات وفروعهم من السادة الحسينة والحسينية والزيدية والعباسية، وهدفه حفظ أنساب وأسماء هذه البيوتات العلوية والتأكيد على صلتها بآل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم، والمؤلف في سياق حديثه عن تاريخ هذه الأسر يتطرق لتعريف بهذه الأسر موضحاً أصولها ومكامنها، وأبرز أعلامها ووجهائها ومكانتهم في القبيلة، وفي مرحلة لاحقة يقدم سرداً بأسماء فروعهم المرموقين في بعض مناطق العراق. وتسهيلاً على الباحث والقارئ عنى المؤلف بتصنيف تسلسل أسماء البيوتات والأسر في الكتاب بحسب سكناهم في المناطق العراقية.
