يدرس المؤلف في هذا الكتاب الصورة الفنية في شعر زهير بن أبي سلمى وهو أحد أشهر شعراء العرب وحكيم الشعراء في الجاهلية، لذلك رأى المؤلف في شعره إمكانية لتمثيل الفن الجاهلي وخاصة الصورة الشعرية منه، وعليه، جاء الكتاب في أربعة فصول وملحق، إستغرق المؤلف في إعداده ست سنوات ونيف.
أما الفصل الأول فخصصه المؤلف لدراسة شخصية زهير: الإنسان، والشاعر، أما الفصل الثاني فجعل المؤلف لدراسة مصدر الصورة عنده، وقد تمثل هذا المصدر في مجالات الحياة الجاهلية المختلفة التي حضرت بخمسة مجالات هي: 1-الإنسان، الحياة اليومية، 3-الطبيعة، 4-الحيوان، 5-الثقافة.
أما الفصل الثالث، فكان حول "رؤيا الشاعر التي التحمت بأشيائه ومعارفه، وعبرت عن نفسها من خلال ذلك كله، لقد حصرت مناقشاتي هنا، وقد توزع الفصل في خمسة محاور هي: 1-المرأة والقبيلة، 2-التوحد والإغتراب، 3-التحول والثبات، 4-الحياة والموت، 5-المكان والزمان.
أما الفصل الرابع فأفرد المؤلف للتشكيل الذي يتم - عادة - في الداخل، ثم يظهر إلى السطح ممثلاً بشكل صوري خاص، وقد عالج مسائل هذا الفصل من خلال ثلاثة ألوان للتشكيل متدرجاً فيها من البساطة إلى التعقيد، وهذه الألوان الثلاثة هي: 1-المظهر الحسي، 2-الوسيلة البلاغية، 3-الترابط في الصورة، مفردة، وعضوية.
ثم ختم المؤلف كتاب بوضع معجم بعنوان "معجم الإستخدام اللغوي للصورة عند زهير" وقد خصص هذا المعجم للإستخدام اللغوي لا للألفاظ اللغوية وذلك لأن دلالة الكلمة الشعرية تتحدد عادة بسياقها.
