يتحدث ابو زيد البلخي في كتابه هذا "البدء والتاريخ" عن بدء الخليقة وكيفية تشكل الأمم ونشوء الدول وظهور الديانات السماوية وتطور الإنسان منذ القدم. ويستشهد لذلك بنصوص من التوراة والإنجيل وبآيات من القرآن الكريم. مستعرضاً الفترات الزمنية للديانات، متناولاً أهم الأحداث التي كان الأثر الكبير في حياة الإنسان جمعاء والأعلام الذين ساهموا في إرساء دعائم الحضارة الإنسانية كالإسكندر ذي القرنين وغيره. متعرضاً بعد ذلك للدول العظمى في العصور القديمة كالفرس والروم والإغريق وصراع هذه الدول لزعامة العالم القديم، ولم ينسى مساهمة الإغريق وفلاسفة اليونان في وضع أسس الفلسفة والمنطق ومبادئ العلوم كافة.
إلى جانب ذلك استعرض المؤلف سيرة الرسول العربي الأمين محمد صلى الله عليه وسلم قاصداً بذلك جعله المثل الأعلى في قيادة الدولة والمجتمع من خلال الآيات القرآنية وأحاديث النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. ومن خلال المعارك التي خاضها الرسول صلى الله عليه وسلم وفتح مكة وأثر هذا الفتح على المسلمين وعلى شبه الجزيرة العربية في تلك الفترة وامتداد الفتوحات بعد وفاة النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم لتشمل بلاد الفرس وتحرير البلاد العربية الأخرى من سيطرة الروم لتصبح دولة إسلامية رافعة راية الحق وراية سيادة العالم القديم كاملاً.
