"البداية السيئة" جزء من سلسلة عبارة عن 13 رواية للكاتب الأمريكي "ليموني سنيكت" وهو مؤلف منكوب كما يصف نفسه، رسومات الرسام المنحوس بريت هيلكويست. يمكن تصنيف السلسلة ضمن روايات أدب النشء وبالرغم من ذلك فقد لاقت رواجاً هائلاً منذ ظهور جزءها الأول "البداية السيئة" في سبتمبر عام 1999 حيث باعت أكثر من 60 مليون نسخة وتُرجمت إلى أكثر من 41 لغة كما تحولت إلى فيلم سينمائي من بطولة الممثل جيم كاري وإلى لعبة فيديو أيضًا، وفي 2017 حولتها نيتفيليكس إلى مسلسل تليفزيوني من موسمين.
تدور أحداث السلسلة حول الإخوة بودلير الذين عاشوا حياة مليئة بالبؤس والويل بعد رحيل وأبويهم في حادث فظيع وتعرضهم لكافة أنواع المتاعب من الكونت أولاف الجشع، تتعقبهم المشكلات حتى ليظن المرء أن فيهم مغناطيسًا جاذبًا لسوء الحظ.
تتناول السلسلة التغيرات النفسية التي تصاحب فترة التحول من الطفولة إلى الرشد كما وبأسلوب السخرية السوداء تلمح إلى بعض القضايا في الفلسفة والأدب.
