تسعة عشر عاماً بقيت السفينة الكينية "موريا" تمخر عباب المحيط قبالة الشواطئ الأفريقية دون أن يحدث لها ما ينبئ بسوء حظ أو كارثة، وحتى قبل مغادرتها في آخر رحلة لها، ميناء مومباس متجهة إلى كيسمايا جرت الأمور على أحسن حال، فقد أبحرت "موريا" بأمان بطاقمها المكون من تسعة أشخاص وبحمولة تقارب ثلاثمائة طن، غير أن زمن الأبحار بين المرفأين الذي لا يتجاوز ستة وثلاثين ساعة طال حتى تجاوز يومين ثم أسبوعين لذلك نظم بحث عن "موريا" استمر قرابة شهر، لكنه لم يعط أية نتيجة، فلم يعثر على أي أثر للسفينة ولا على الشواطئ القريبة ولم يظهر أي دليل على وقوع كارثة على متنها وغرقها، لقد اختفت "موريا" بلا أثر.
إن مثل حادثة هذه السفينة لهو كثير الوقوع، فحسب إحصائيات شركة الضمان البحري الإنكليزية "لويد" يتعرض حوالي 250 سفينة سنوياً لكوارث في عرض البحر، كما ويختفي قسم منها بلا أثر، ويجد المنقذون أحياناً ما يعوض بـ "السفن الطائرة" وهي سفن فارغة لا أحد على متنها بالإضافة إلى هذه الظاهرة الغريبة التي هي محط ذهول ودهشة العلماء، تقفز إلى الواجهة صورة الصحون الطائرة فقد كثرت الأقاويل، وتعددت الحكايات والمعلومات والشهادات التي تناولت موضوع هذه الصحون وهذه الأجسام المجهولة القادمة من كواكب أخرى. يتناول الباحثون والعلماء في هذا الكتاب بالدراسة والتحليل شتى هذه الظواهر، معتمدين على المعطيات العلمية التي تروي ظمأ القراء على اختلاف مستوياتهم لمعرفة حقيقة هذه الظواهر وخفاياها.
