منذ الخمسينات ونحن نسمع عن ظاهرة غريبة تشاهد في السماء، تسبح وتتلالأ، دون أن نعرف ماهيتها أو مصدرها، دون أن نعرف دافعها أو أهدافها، دون أن نتصور ملاحيها أو مرسليها، دون أن نعرف أي شيء عن سر القوة الهائلة المحركة الرافعة لها، ولا من مزاياها الأخرى، سوى ما أطلق عليها منذ ذلك الحين الصحون الطائرة أو "الأطباق الطائرة".
وهذه التسمية تزداد تواتراً وانتشاراً على مر السنين، كما أن شكل الطبق الطائر-حسب ما كان مألوفاً لهذه الظاهرة. أخذ يتنوع إلى أشكال أخرى سابحة في الفضاء، مجهولة الهوية، كشكل "سيكار" وشكل بيضاوي، وذلك كله رونق رواية المشاهدين في الشرق وفي الغرب على حد سواء، مع الإشارة إلى وجود تطابق كبير في الأوصاف.
واستناداً إلى روايات مختلفة وعديدة، يظهر أنها رافقت المشاهدات العينية للأجسام الطائرة المجهولة الهوية في بعض الحالات عند هبوطها على الأرض، اتصالات ولقاءات ملاحيها (كائنات حية غريبة)، مع أشخاص من بني البشر، لقاءات تكاد تكون ضرباً من الخيال والحلم.
وأمام ما رواه المشاهدون، احتدم الجدال بين مصدق ومكذب، هذا الجدال انتشر وتعاظم، دون أن يحسم لصالح أي من الفريقين. هذا ورغم حرص الدول الكبرى كالولايات المتحدة الأميركية والاتحاد السوفييتي، على الحفاظ على سرية هذه المشاهدات، ورغم تظاهر تلك الدول بعدم اهتمامها بهذه الظاهرة، وصرف أنظار الرأي العام العالمي عنها، فقد تسربت تقارير عديدة عن بعض المسؤولين، تفيد بأن الأجسام الطائرة المجهولة الهوية، لا بد لها من أن تكون صادرة عن مجالات خارج الكرة الأرضية وأنها تأتي إلى الأرض وعلى متنها كائنات حيّة، عاقلة، ذكية، قد تكون متفرقة في تقدم علمي باهر على أهل الأرض، وقد يكون هذا التقدم لمئات بل آلاف السنين.
وهكذا يحاول المؤلف في كتابه هذا سرد قصة هذه الأطباق والأجسام الطائرة المجهولة الهوية، موقفاً القارئ على حقيقتها، ومؤكداً له صحة ما يروى حولها وذلك من خلال دلائل عن لقاءات مثيرة مع الغرباء الذين هبطوا من السماء.
