إن موضوع نظرية المعرفة من الموضوعات الحديثة، التي رتبت ونسقت كعلم مستقل مع فلاسفة محدثين، لكن هذا لا يمنع القول إن مشكلة المعرفة قديمة قدم التفلسف وجذورها ممتدة على طول التاريخ الفلسفي، ولطالما كانت معرفة الاشياء هي من إختصاص الإنسان، كونه كائناً مفكراً بفطرته.
ولذلك، كان التساؤل والبحث عن حقيقة الأشياء أمرٌ طبيعي بالنسبة له، مع الإختلاف بطبيعة التساؤل إذ هنالك من يسأل بطريقة بسيطة وسطحية وهم عامة الناس، وهنالك من يسأل بطريقة معمقة وهم القلة، وعليه كان السؤال ذو الطريقة المعمقة والباحث عن الحقيقة موجوداً في ثنايا بحث الفلاسفة المسلمين ولو وقفنا مع الفارابي لنفتش عن نظرية المعرفة وأن كان لم يضع نظرية خاصة ومستقلة في المعرفة الإنسانية، كما فعل في بعض نظرياته التي تخص السياسة والتصوف والموسيقى والماورائيات وغيرها.
إلا أن أفكاره هي نظرية المعرفة جاءت منثورة بين طيات مؤلفاته؛ ولذلك جاءت هذه الدراسة لتوضح منهجاً معرفياً سار عليه الفارابي في منظومته الفلسفية؛ من خلال توضيح لمصادر المعرفة وطبيعة هذه المصادر بالإضافة إلى طبيعة العلاقة بين الذات المدركة والموضوع المدرَك.
وكان المنهج المتبع في هذه الدراسة هو المنهج التحليلي من خلال قراءة نصوص الفارابي وتحليلها وتوظيفها لموضوع نظرية المعرفة.
