إن الفن العظيم هو دوماً عصي المنال، لا يريق مذاقه الحميم عند النهلة الأولى، ولا يكشف حجبه عند النظرة الأولى، وإنما يبذل جماله المستتر ومعانيه الخفية للمثابرين المخلصين العاكفين على تأمل حسنه والابتهال إلى حكمته... ومن هذا الضرب فن نجيب محفوظ. فكتاباته دائماً شاحذة للذهن، باعثة على التساؤل، معطاءة لمن يسعى في دروبها الخفية وراء الإجابات المراوغة. إذ لطالما استخدم نجيب محفوظ وسائل المراوغة الفنية كالرمز، والأليغورية، والأسطورة، والتاريخ، والزمن المستقبلي، والحكاية الشعبية... لأسباب جمالية حيناً أو لأغراض عملية أحياناً. ولذلك كله، فإن المعنى في كتاباته ليس دائماً قريب المنال على سطح السطور، وإنما يغلب أن يحتاج القارئ أن يحفر وراء الطبقات العليا للكلمات والصور والمواقف والأبنية والشخصيات، وأن ينقب بمعاوله الذهنية فيما بين السطور... وهذا الكتاب هو حصيلة تنقيبي بين بعض سطور نجيب محفوظ.
