تحتاج روايات نجيب محفوظ ، إلى هذا النوع من القراءة الجادة لكى تبقى فى صورتها المكتوبة موضع اهتمام، ولكى تجتذب فى هذه الصورة مزيداً من القراء. وهى تحتاج أيضاً إلى هذا النوع من القراءة حتى يتخلص معنى النقد من بعض الظلال الكريهة التى تحيط به، كالإسراف فى الإعجاب، أو الإسراف فى الرفض، أو الإهتمام الشديد "بالحكم"، وحتى يكون معناه مرادفاً لمعنى القراءة الفاحصة. ومجموعة الروايات التى اخترتها نماذج للقراءة فى محاولتى هذه تنتمى جميعها إلى مرحلة ما بعد "الثلاثية"، وهى "اللص والكلاب"، "والسمان والخريف"، "والطريق"، "والشحاذ"، "وثرثرة فوق النيل"، "وميرامار". وليس معنى هذا الإختيار أن هذه الروايات أولى أعمال نجيب محفوظ بالتناول، كما أنه ليس معناه أن هذه الروايات لا يصح أن تتناول إلا مجموعة هكذا؛ فقد قلت إن كل عمل يكون -فى نظرى- كياناً كاملاً. لكننى لم أر ضيراً على كل حال من أن آخذ أمثلتى مجموعة من الروايات كتبت متتابعة، وأن أتناولها بترتيب هذا التتابع.
