الخنساء واسمها تماضر بنت عمرو السلمية (575م - 24 هـ / 645م)، صحابية وشاعرة مخضرمة من أهل صفينة ( قرية بمهد الذهب ) بالحجاز ، أدركت الجاهلية والإسلام وأسلمت، واشتهرت برثائها لأخويها صخر ومعاوية اللذين قتلا في الجاهلية. لقبت بالخنساء بسبب ارتفاع أرنبتي أنفها.
اللقب
لُقّبَتْ بالخنساء لقصر أنفها وارتفاع أرنبتيه. قال الحُصري في كتاب زهر الأدب: لقبت بالخنساء كناية عن الظبية وكذلك الذلفاء والذلف قصر في الأنف ويريدون به أيضًا أنه من صفات الظباء.
نسبها
سكنوا بادية الحجاز في الشمال الشرقي من مدينة يثرب، حيث تمتد مضارب بني سليم.
كما اعتز النبي محمد بالانتساب إلى بني سليم، فكان يقول: " أنا ابن الفواطم من قريش، والعواتك من سليم، وفي سليم شرف كثير "، وآل الشريد كانوا سادة بني سليم. وعمرو بن الحارث -أبو تماضر- كان من وفود العرب على كسرى، وكان يأخذ بيدي ابنيه معاوية وصخر في الموسم حتى إذا توسط الجمع قال بأعلی صوته: أنا أبو خيري مضر، فمن أنكر فليغير. فلا يغير عليه أحد. وكان يقول: من أتى بمثلهما أخوين من قبل فله حكمه. فتقر له العرب بذلك.
