لا تكتمل المعرفة باللغة الإنجليزية بمعرفة قواعدها النحوية فحسب، وإنما بمعرفة استخدام الجمل والعبارات والكلمات سواء في التعبير عما يجيش في النفس من مشاعر وأحاسيس وخواطر، وهو ما يطلق عليه اصطلاحاً بالأدب أو بإرسال الرسائل أو المحاورة (الحوار) مع الناس أو الاستماع إلى الأمثال والحكم أو الأغاني. فهي جميعاً-كما سنرى- في فصول هذا الكتاب تعني فهم اللغة-أي لغة- فهماً صحيحاً، ولا يتم ذلك إلا بالإلمام الجاد بهذه الحقول إلمام جيداً، وخصوصاً التعرف على معاني الكلمات-أياً كانت-معرفة تامة، مثل كلمة: معجم أو قاموس: (Dictionary) أو موسوعة: (Encyclopedia) أو آداب: (Arts) أو اليوبيل الماسي: (Siamons Jubilee) أو حوار: (Dialogue) أو حديث: (conversation).
ثم يأتي بعد ذلك مرحلة الفهم للجمل والعبارات فهماً صحيحاً، واستيعاب استعمالاتها المتعددة عن طريق الترجمة الحرفية أحياناً أو محاولة تقريب المعنى إلى لغة الأم، وهي: اللغة العربية.
وتأتي مرحلة التذوق بالأدب سواء كان شعراً أو نثراً أو قصة أو رواية أو الحكم والأمثال أو الأغاني والفنون بعد معرفة القواعد الخاصة باللغة، وتكوين ثروة هائلة لا تقل بأي حال من الأحوال عن عشرات الآلاف من الكلمات والعبارات والجمل، فهي طريق العبور إلى التذوق بالأدب والإنشاء والترجمة من لغة إلى أخرى، ولا يتم ذلك إلا بالحرص على التعليم، والإصرار على التعليم الذي يأتي عادة شيئاً فشيئاً مع ضرورة الأخذ بالحسبان أن القراءة المتأنية تعد المدخل إلى إجادة اللغة-أيا لغة لأنها مفتاح للتركيز على معاني الكلمات والجمل والعبارات غلى جانب أن القراءة الجادة تضيف إلى القارئ أشياء لم تخطر على باله مطلقاً كزيادة الحصيلة اللغوية، وتحسين لغة الإلقاء والمحادثة والحوار.
هذا الكتاب: يغطي بشيء من التفصيل هذه الجوانب بكاملها، لذلك فهو يمثل الجانب التطبيقي لتعلم اللغة الإنجليزية تعلماً شاملاً لكافة حقول العلم والمعرفة والأدب.
