اللغة بالتعريف كلام البشر المنطوق أو المكتوب، وهي: نظام الاتصال الأكثر شيوعاً بين البشر، لأنها تتيح للناس التحدث بعضهم مع بعض، والتعبير نطقاً أو كتابة عن أفكارهم وآرائهم.
وقد جاء في محكم التنزيل: "الرحمن، علم القرءان، خلق الإنسن، علمه البيان".
وتوجد اللغة أينما وجد البشر-زرافات أو وحداناً-لأن النشاط البشري يعتمد أساساً على ضرورة وجود لغة مشتركة تسهل التعامل بين الأمم، ولا يتم تشييد أي حضارة إلا من خلالها في مختلف الحقول المتعلقة بالثقافة والأدب والعلوم والفنون والاقتصاد.
ويقدر عدد اللغات المنطوقة في العالم اليوم ثلاثة آلاف لغة، ولا يدخل في هذا الإحصاء (اللهجات) المحلية، وهي أشكال محلية للغة.
وهناك لغات كثيرة تتكلمها مجموعات صغيرة مكونة من بضع مئات أو آلاف البشر.
كما توجد أكثر من مائة لغة يتكلم بها أكثر من بليون نسمة، ومن بين هذه اللغات، توجد تسعة عشر لغة يتكلم بها أغلب بلدان العالم، وهي: العربية والإنجليزية والفرنسية والإسبانية، والصينية، والبنغالية، والهندية، والإيطالية، واليابانية، والكورية، والملاوية، والإندونيسية، والماراثية، والبرتغالية، والبنجابية، والروسية، والتأميلية، والتيلوجية، والأردية.
