يشكّل هذا الكتاب دراسة في ديوان " أفق وشفق " للشاعر السوداني توفيق صالح جبريل ( ولد سنة 1897 - وتوفي سنة 1966 ) . حقق الديوان الدكتور محمد إبراهيم أبو سليم ومحمد صالح حسن ، اللذان اعتبرا أن شعر جبريل يقسم إلى نمطين أولهما : النمط التقليدي المتأثر بمدرسة شوقي وحافظ ، ونمط آخر من الشعر الوجداني لضيق نفس الشاعر ، وهو يمتد من وطنياته إلى الأصدقاء والذكريات ، والخمر ، والمرض ، والطرائف ، والمداعبات ، والسخرية والهجاء . أما نثره فهو عبارة عن شذرات تتناول أمانيه وآماله الوطنية ، وهي في جملتها ملحقات لأبياته وإن كانت تعكس أحياناً اهتمامه بجمع الحكم والأقوال وجوامع الكلم وأحياناً التعليق عليها .
أما عن طريقة التحقيق في الديوان ، وبعد أن تجمعت نسخ كثيرة للقصائد ، بعضها مسودات ، وبعضها قصائد في صورتها النهائية ، وبعضها قصاصات مما نُشر في الصحف ، بدأ العمل على الدراسة المقارنة للنظم في كل أوراق الشاعر ، ثم ذكر الإختلافات بعد قراءة المسودات ، ثم ترتيب القصائد حسب القوافي وحسب تتابعها الزمني ، مع الإشارة إلى أن عدداً من قصائد الشاعر جاء من دون تاريخ ... فكان أن احتوى هذا الكتاب على ثلاثمائة قصيدة للشاعر في الشعر العربي الموزون والمقفى ...
