تبيّن خريطة الأعلام التي اختار المؤلف تقديمها في هذا الكتاب للقراء، وكأنها منتقاة لغاية مسبقة، فالظاهر أن أديبين مثل الطيب صالح وعبد الرحمن منيف لا يجمعهما رابط بعلماء اجتماع مثل العراقي علي الوردي وبول باسكون المغربي وعبد الله حمودي، ولا يشترك هؤلاء عموماً مع مفكرين ذوي معارك نضالية، مثل أركون والجابري وحامد أبو زيد والعروي وإدوارد سعيد وعزمي بشارة، لكن الخيط الناظم الخفي هو انتماء أعمالهم إلى مقروء المؤلف طيفور الذي ظل متتبعاً لكل أصحاب المعارك على اختلاف اهتماماتهم. هذا أولاً، أما ثانياً يبدو المشترك بين هؤلاء الأعلام هو فعل المواجهة سواء للسلطة السياسية مباشرة في وجهها الفاقع المتمثل في الدولة أو القوى الدولية أو في جذورها الثقافية مثل ما هو مبيّن عند كتّاب الرواية، أو في أشكالها الإجتماعيون كما يرى السوسيولوجيون. وأخيراً، وهذه هي الغاية عند المؤلف وهو يقرأ مواجهة سلطة البنية المعرفية التقليدية ذات الطابع الديني مثل ما هو الأمر بالنسبة إلى عبد الجواد ياسين وعبد الكريم سروش والصادق النيهوم وعبد الكريم خليل وعبد الله القصيمي ... وآخرون يستضيفهم المؤلف في هذا العمل كنماذج عن مثقفي العصر الحديث.
