إلى أين ما محروس؟! مد محروس بصره نحو الجبل، خفق قلبه وهو يقول: سوف أرعى أغنامي في الجبل. أتمزح يا محروس!، قالها مصباح في دهشة فرد محروس: أبداً! نظر الرعاة إلى بعضهم البعض، قال أحدهم وهو يمسح على أغنام محروس: إذاً فقد أصابك مس من الجنون! ضحك بعضهم وهمهم آخرون بينما عقدت الدهشة لسان مصباح، قال أحدهم تهكم: ألا تخاف يا محروس، أن يقضمك الوحش بين أنيابه؟! قال مصباح في دهشة بالغة: يبدو أنك لا تخاف من نفسك. تنهد محروس، قال متحسراً وهو يلقي بنظره على الأرض الصفراء الممتدة إلى أسفل الوادي: أن خوفي الأعظم هو أن تنفق الأغنام جوعاً رد مصباح في لهجة الودود العاتب: الأغنام يا صاحبي قد تجد لها مراعي هنا وهناك وقد يكرمنا الله بنزول المطر فيتغير الحال، أما أنت فقد لا نراك بعد اليوم. أو ننتظر مطول المطر والمراعي هناك في الأعلى غنية، وغلى متى سننتظر. ليس بيدنا سوى الانتظار، لوى محروس رأسه عنهم ليكمل سيره، لحقته أصوات الرعاة محذرة، عد يا محروس.. أرجه وإلا لقيت حتفك.
