حين يكتب إلياس فرحات (1893-1976م) يومياته في "أحلام الراعي" فإنه يجسد سيرته الحياتية النضالية والشعرية، لا بل حلمه الإنساني الكبير. وكلما ذكرنا فرحات فلا بد أن نذكر الطفولة والهم القومي والوطني لبلدة الصغير لبنان، فكلماته نابضة بالحياة وبحب الوطن والأهل، هي خلجات قلبه يرسلها من بلاد الإغتراب لتتشكل في نسيج قصيدي ثيمته الفنية تنبع من بنية كلامية توصل معانيها ورموزها وغاياتها ببساطة وبأسلوب سهل وممتع ... نقرأ له:
"عادت إلى خدرها ذكاءُ / والطير عادت إلى الوكورْ ، والزهر عادت – ولا حياء - / شيئاً فشيئاً إلى السفور ، شقي دجى الحجب يا دراري / لم يُغلق الحسن للحجاب ، والدرّ ما دام في المحار / لم يعلُ قدراً عن التراب ...".
هذا، وقد قسم الشاعر ديوانه هذا إلى مجموعات جاءت تحت العناوين الآتية: "الخمر والحب والشباب" ، " سلام الغاب" ، "محاكمة" ، "فلسفة الغضروف" ، "رثاء الغضروف" ... الخ.
يبقى أن نشير أن ديوان فرحات "أحلام الراعي" صدر أول مرة عن دار مجلة الشرق بالبرازيل في عام (1951م). وهذه هي الطبعة الثانية في العام (1962) عن دار العلم للملايين.
