يضم هذا الكتاب بين دفتيه دراسة استطلاعية تحليلة قام بها "توفيق أبو بكر" في صحف عربية مختارة، بقصد التعرف على تغطيتها لقضايا حقوق الإنسان المختلفة، ولاختبار الأفكار النظرية التي تكونت عنده وعند الكثيرين من المثقفين العرب حول الصحافة العربية وحقوق الإنسان. هذا وقد دارت موضوعات هذه الدراسة حول أربعة محاور رئيسية كبرى وهي فصول هذا الكتاب: الفصل الأول: الصحافة العربية وواقع حقوق الإنسان، الفصل الثاني: صحافة الرأي والرأي الآخر، الفصل الثالث: التحليلات الإخبارية في الصحافة العربية الفصل الرابع، اتفاقات دولية حول الصحافة والإعلام.
وعلى أثر هذه الدراسة توصل إلى نتائج عدة مؤداها أولاً: أن السمة الأساسية لتغطية هذه الصحف لقضايا حقوق الإنسان هي "الانتقائية الصارخة، والمحكومة بالموقف السياسي الرسمي إلى حد كبير ثانياً: كشفت هذه الدراسة الاستطلاعية عن صعف بالغ في الاهتمام بقضايا حقوق الإنسان على المستوى المحلي أو العربي أو الدولي، ثالثاً: إن نسبة تغطية هذه الصحف لقضايا حقوق الإنسان على الصعيد العالمي ولعالمية حقوق الإنسان مازالت محدودة جداً، وما زال الكتاب الذين يتصورون لمناقشة ضرورات العمل ضمن إطار حركات عالمية لحقوق الإنسان محدودي العدد، وتضيع أصواتهم وسط الزحام.
