يضم الكتاب حوارات أجريت مع عدد متميز من المثقفين العرب، من مختلف الاتجاهات والتيارات الفكرية الأربعة في حياتنا الثقافية: اليسارية والقومية والليبرالية والدينية المتنورة. والسؤال المحوري المطروح هو حول المثقف ودوره في صنع القرار السياسي، ومكانه ومكانته، وارتباطاته بصانعي هذا القرار، وفاعليته في المجال السياسي. كان ثمة اتفاق في مسائل واختلاف في مسائل أخرى، وثمة تفصيل وتعمق في كافة القضايا المطروحة للحوار ولإثراء النقاش، وذلك وحده طريق استخلاص الدروس واستخلاص المواقف، فالحوار أولاً وأخيراً هو الوسيلة العلمية، للاعتراف بالآخر باعتباره امتداداً وليس نقيضاً، وهو الوسيلة الوحيدة للتفاعل في جو صحيّ مهذب ورصين مع الأفكار الأخرى وممارسة التأثر والتأثير لاستخلاص أكبر قدر ممكن من الصوابية النسبية، بعيداً عن احتكار الصواب التي دفع ثمنها غالياً، في السياسة وفي المجتمع وفي كل مناحي الحياة. الاعتراف بنسبية الحقيقة هو المدخل الجدي لتحقيق الفوائد من أي حوار، وإلا تحول إلى حوار نصوص وتراشق بالمقولات الثابتة والسرمدية في عالم لا ثابت فيه إلا التغيّر.
تركزت هذه الحوارات مع كوكبة متميزة من المثقفين العرب من العديد من أقطار العرب، وهذه الشهادات التي أودع فيها أصحابها عصارة فكرهم وخلاصة تجاربهم على عدد من القضايا الكبرى المتعلقة بدور المثقف العربي وموقعه من حركة المجتمع.
وأجاب كبار المثقفين في هذه الحلقات حول هذه الأسئلة الكبرى: هل انحياز المثقف العربي للسلطة سقوط سياسي أم ماذا؟ وهل نجحت دعوات تجسير الفجوة بين المثقف والحاكم في بلادنا، ما دور المثقفين العرب في أحزاب المعارضة وهل يؤدون دورهم التنويري أم أن الانكفاء والاغتراب والتراجع أصبح سمة كبيرة في صفوفهم؟ هل يعيشون في أبراج عاجية؟ كيف يناقشون قضايا السلام والتطبيع، هل لدينا مثقفون مستعدون للاستشهاد في سبيل ما يؤمنون به.
