المسرح وسيلة مهمة لفهم المجتمع الإنساني والعلاقات البشرية السائدة من جهة، والإسهام بعملية تغيير المجتمع من حيث أن المجتمع لا يزيد في واقع الأمر بكل مظاهره عن كونه حالة تفاعل مستمرة وتحول دائم، في ضوء ذلك تتحدد أهمية بحثنا هذا وتكمن الحاجة إليه من خلال محاولة دراسة طبيعة العلاقة بين الجمهور والعرض المسرحي العراقي، ذلك لأن عملية الخلق الفني في المسرح تظل معادلة ناقصة مالم تكتمل بعنصر جوهري ذلكم هو استيعاب الجمهور لما تنتجه من الآثار النفسية، وأهمية بحثنا تتجلى في أنه الأول في مجاله، وفي تصديه لمسألة (الجمهور) والتي خلت أغلب الدراسات السابقة من التعرض إليه بهذا الشكل الكامل، وظلت تناقش في أفضل أحوالها جوانب العرض المسرحي الأخرى، إنّ هذا البحث يعالج هذه المسألة التي يعاني منها مسرحنا، وهي كما يرى الباحث لم تعد مقتصرة على مسيرة المسرح في العراق، بل هي قائمة في بقية أقطار العروبة، وقد ناقش العديد من المسرحيين العرب نقاداً ومخرجين ومؤلفين، وسيعرج الباحث على مختلف الآراء والمفاهيم والتجارب العربية التي تناولت هذه المسألة بالبحث والدراسة على اعتبار أن النظر إلى مسألة (الجمهور) على المستوى القطري بمعزل عن مناقشيها قومياً تظل قاصرة ومجزئة إذا ما أخذنا بنظر الاعتبار تاريخ دخول المسرح للوطن العربي (رسمياً).
