اشتهر جعفر السراج بكتابه مصارع العشاق الذي قضى في تأليفه وقتاً طويلاً من حياته في القرن الخامس الهجري، وروته عنه تلميذته شهدة بنت أحمد بن الفرج الإبري الدينوري في النصف الثاني من القرن السادس الهجري.
كان موضوع العشق محل نظر وتفكر في أوساط أهل العلم والمتأدبين في مجتمعات ديار الإسلام، وقد جذب إلى التأليف فيه عدداً من العلماء، وشهدت هذه الأوساط ترجمة ما كتب عن الحب والعشق في آداب أمم أخرى انتمت إلى حضارات مزدهرة مثل الهنود والفرس والإغريق، وذلك حين اتسعت دائرة الحضارة العربية الإسلامية وتفاعلت مع تلك الحضارات.
من المتوقع أن يكون جعفر السراج قد أطلع، وهو المثقف، على جل ما كان المثقفون في عصره يتداولونه من كتب الحب والعشق المؤلفة والمترجمة.
وطبيعي أن يكون تأثر بما قرأ وأخذ من تلك الكتب، وهذا يبدو جلياً من الحكايات التي ذكرها في كتابه، كما لا بد أن يكون أحاط برؤية عصره للموضوع، ومن ثم ألف كتابه الذي طبعه بطابعه، وهكذا فإن كتاب مصارع العشاق يمثل حلقة في سلسلة هذه الكتابات.
