قصة الثائر محمد محمود أبو جلدة هو ما ترويه الكاتبة والإعلامية الفلسطينية حنان بكير في هذا الكتاب، لتقول بها ومن خلالها تاريخاً حافلاً بالبطولة، لرجال مناضلين رحلوا، ولكن حكاياتهم باقية في الوجدان العربي، وكأن الكاتبة تحاول إنقاذ ذاكرة؛ وصون تاريخ؛ يعى على التزوير، بواسطة الأدب، فإذا كان التاريخ لا يشكل غاية الرواية، فإنه لا مانع من أن يكون وسيلة للروين ترى الحاضر في عيون الماضي.
الكتاب يحكي قصة الثائر محمد محمود أبو جلدة، وتعتمد الكاتبة في قصتها على وثيقة، ربما تعتبر نادرة، وهي نسخة من مجلة يعود تاريخ صدورها إلى أيار 1934م، ورئيس تحريرها اللبناني أديب يوسف صادر، مع فصل يعرض تضارب وجهتي نظر، لسيرة ذلك الثائر. وساهم اهتمام الكاتبة بالبحث عن سيرته، بوقوعها على تلك المخطوطة، التي قررت نشرها، مع تنويه، من الكاتبة، بأن البحث في سيرته بشكل دقيق، يتطلب البحث في الأرشيف البريطاني، لكن الهدف الرئيسي يبقى هو إعطاء هذا الثائر حقه كرمز نضالي، خاصة للأجيال الناشئة.
والثائر هو محمد محمود أبو جلدة، من قرية طحون، محافظة ناتبلس، اعتصم في الجبال مع مجموعة من رجاله، الذين مارسوا حرب عصابات ضد الإنكليز الصهاينة وطبقة الإقطاعيين الفلسطينيين من الذين أثروا زمن السلطة العثمانية، وفشلت كل وسائل الإغراء التي قدمتها الشرطة البريطانية، لمن يقبض عليه، أو من يدلي بمعلومات تساعد في القبض عليه، فقد كان هذا الثائر ذا شعبية كبيرة في منطقته، وما كان من سلطات الاحتلال إلا اعتباره خارجاً عن القانون وقاطع طريق. وهكذا لم يأخذ هذا الثائر حقه كرمز نضالي في تاريخ القضية الفلسطينية. وفي النهاية تتوقف الرواية، عند اعتقال أبو جلدة ورفيقه العرميط، لكن نهايتهما كانت معروفة: الإعدام شنقاً.
