دلت الشواهد التاريخية المتعددة على أن مدينة عمان هي مدينة الماضي البعيد الذي بدأ حين أقام فيها إنسانها الأول هذه الأنصاب الضخمة ليثبت بها وجوده (فقد سكن بناة الأنصاب بيوتاً حجرية وأحاطوها بالأسوار حتى تطورت فأصبحت تحصينات تدل على أن هذا الإنسان وصل إلى درجة ليست قليلة من التقدم في التحصن، كان ذلك في الألف السادس قبل الميلاد وقبل الإهتداء إلى صنع الفخار).
لقد بدأت الجماعات البشرية تتطور منذ ذلك الوقت إلى أن أصبحت المدينة حاضرة هذه المنطقة والمعروفة باسم عمّون سنة 1200 ق.م.
(امتدت مملكة ربة عمون بين ثلاثة أنهار هي أرنون (الزرقاء) شمالاً ويبوق (الموجب) جنوباً، والأردن غرباً، وتشمل حسب بعض الروايات على عشرين مدينة).
ولما اكتسبت المدينة أهميتها الإقتصادية بسبب ثروتها المائية والزراعية فقد أُقحمت في التاريخ السياسي إذ تعرضت للغزو الإسرائيلي والآشوري والبابلي، والفارسي واليوناني والروماني... إلى أن دخلت في الحكم الإسلامي على يد (القائد العربي يزيد بن أبي سفيان، ومما يجدر بالذكر أن السمية السامية القديمة عادت إلى المدينة أي عمان بدلاً من فيلادلفيا).
لقد ازدهرت عمان طوال فترات الحكم الإسلامي المتعاقبة وحتى أواخر العصر المملوكي حين (تعرض العالم بأسره إلى الوباء الذي عرف بالمصادر القديمة بالوباء الأسود فعمّ بلاد الشام وفتك بأهالي عمان وحسبان والسلط وعجلون، (ثم اجتاحت منطقة شرق الأردن أسرار الجراد العظيمة) فاستحالت المدينة خراباً.
وفي القرن التاسع الهجري (الخامس عشر الميلادي) برزت مدينة السلط لتلعب دوراً بارزاً ولتصبح قاعدة للبلقاء، وفي تلك الفترة تحولت عمان مع الزمن إلى قرية صغيرة وبقيت هكذا حتى أواخر القرن التاسع عشر وبالتحديد سنة 1878 حين جاء إليها الشراكسة فعمروها وأعادوا إليها الحياة من جديد.
