إن من أيسر الأشياء على الفنان أن يعبّر عن الفكاهة الرخيصة، ومن أصعب الأمور أن يكوّن منها فناً يحاكي الروح الشعبية فيصل بها إلى مستويات رفيعة كقصص إيزوب في الأدب اليوناني القديم التي تشبه في معانيها الفلسفية الموضوعات الهزلية المرسومة على شقف الأحجار الفرعونية.
وتفيض رسوم "ناجي العلي" الخاصة بالموضوعات الشعبية بالمرح والطرافة، وهي في الوقت نفسه تتحدث إلى صميم نفوسنا، لأنها شخصيات نعرفها منذ زمن طويل، وهي شخصيات لا تزول كالشخصيات التي وضعها الكاتب الإسباني سيرفانتش في روايته دون كيخوته، وهي شخصيات تعيش أبد الدهر يتذوقها الجيل بعد الآخر لأنها شخصيات منتزعة من صميم الحياة... ولقد شغلت مظاهر الحياة الشعبية قسطاً كبيراً في إنتاج الفنان "محمد ناجي" فوقف جزءاً كبيراً من رسومه على تسجيل جوانبها المختلفة وهذا ما سيلحظه القارئ بعد اطلاعه على مضمون هذا الكتاب الذي يحتوي إلى جانب خمسة وسبعين لوحة تمثل الحياة الشعبية على دراسة نظرية هدفها إظهار بعض الجوانب الفنية المجهولة عن الفنان العلي، ولا سيما في نخبة من رسومه الكثيرة. ومن أهم المحاور التي تطرق لها الباحث في دراسته هذه نذكر: دراسة ناجي العلي للتراث الإسلامي في إنتاج ناجي، ناجي والرسوم الشعبية في التراث المصري، مظاهر الحياة الشعبية وأثرها في أعمال المصورين، ما أسهم به ناجي في دراسة الفنون الشعبية الفن الشعبي وصلته بمظاهر الحياة الشعبية.
