حين جاءت الأديان السماوية تباعاً (اليهودية والمسيحية والإسلام) إلى حياة الإنسان واستقرت عقيدة إيمانية جلبت معها أنماطاً من الوسائط التي أسهمت في استبدال ممارسات الإنسان الدموية بمحاكاة أفعال أخرى تضمن فكرة الخلاص من الموت وتمنح الإنسان في ظل إيمانه حقه في الوجود، فكان الدم من جهة الفدية أو من جهة التكفير عن الذنب أوضح الشواهد دلالة على العطاء الذي لا يمكن لمؤمن مهما كان انتسابه الإيماني أن يأتي إلى حضرة القداسة دون أن يكون قد سفك إما دماً بشرياً أو دماً حيوانياً لينال "البر والتقوى" والخلاص.
وقد تكشف مفهوم الدم بما يحمله من إحالات شتى ورموز مختلفة من خلال حضوره في النصوص الدينية الثلاثة، العهد القديم والعهد الجديد والقرآن، بأشكال لغوية ودلالية متنوعة ومتباعدة فيما بينها بحسب الأنساق المعرفية التي وردت فيها.
يطرح هذا الكتاب موضوع الدم بالإعتماد على النصوص الدينية المقدسة وهو ما يستوجب النظر إلى هذه النصوص الثلاثة باعتبارها مصادر متباعدة زمنياً في أصل النشأة، ولكنها تنحدر من المشرب الإلهي نفسه وتتطلب مراعاة الفواصل التاريخية الفاصلة فيما بينها بثقلها الثقافي والحضاري دونما تغاضٍ عن خصوصية كل نص ديني يدعي النضج والإكتمال.
