الثمار والثمر والأثمار كلها تعني حمل الشجر، أي خيرات الأرض التي يحملها لنا النبات، صغيراً كان هذا النبات أم كبيراً. وإذا أردنا التعريف العلمي للثمرة فيكفي أن نقول إن جميع النباتات التي تتكاثر بالبذور تحيط بذورها بأنواع مختلفة من الأغلفة الجافة (كاللوز والبندق) أو الطرية (كالبطيخ والتفاح والعنب)، وتسمى البذرة (أو البذور) مع الغلاف الذي يحيط بها، ثمرة.
وفي هذه المعلقة الجميلة يتعرف الطفل مختلف أنواع ثمار الأرض. فهي بذلك تعمل كحلقة وصل بين ما يعرفه الطفل في العربية وما يتعلمه في الأجنبية وتصلح كمادة قراءة في مستوى فني وتشويقي وتثقيفي ممتاز.
هذه المعلقة في غرفة الصف (أو في غرفة الطفل الخاصة) هي في الواقع إدخال العالم الخارجي النابض بالحياة إلى غرفة الصف، وليس أجمل من عالم الثمار عالم تطل به غرفة الصف على العالم الخارجي.
