نال النحو العربي اهتمام العلماء لأهمية في الحياة العلمية أولاً، ولأنه العماد الأساس في تقويم اللسان وصون لغة القرآن من اللحن ثانياً. ووجود هذه العلاقة بين هذا العلم والقرآن أدى إلى مواكبة علم النحو العربي للعلوم القرآنية الأخرى في تطورها. فجاءت فيه المصنفات، التي كان الهدف الأول منها تقنين القواعد النحوية بأسلوب يمكن الاحتجاج بها في القضايا اللغوية، غير أن كثرة المؤلفات النحوية مع اختلاف أزمنتها، وتباين وجهات نظر النحويين فيها في تفسير الظواهر اللغوية أدى إلى اتساع رقعة الخلاف في النحو، الأمر الذي جعل من الصعب الإحاطة بدقائق هذا العلم والوصول إلى جوهره لكثرة هذا التراث وتراكمه. وهو ما جدا بدارسي هذا التراث أن ينهجوا منهجاً علمياً يقوم على أساس دراسة أبواب النحو دراسة بعضها مستقل عن بعضها الآخر لبيان ما جاء فيها وتوضيح قضاياها التركيبية والأعرابية .
وهذا الكتاب جزء من هذه الدراسات، فقد عالج فيه المؤلف موضوع الاستثناء، وهو باب كثر فيه الخلاف، وتباينت فيه الآراء، سواء كان ذلك في أدواته أم في أنماطه أو في قضاياه التركيبية والإعرابية لاهتمام النحويين به من جهة، واختلاف لغة الحجاز به من جهة ثانية. ولتداخل بعض أنماطه بين النحو والبلاغة، وخاصة بأن القصر في جهة ثالثة.
وللإحاطة بموضوع مادة البحث جاء الكتاب في فصول أربعة: الفصل الأول يضم دراسة للمصطلحات التي استخدمت في هذا الباب مع بيان مدلولاتها التي أفصحت عنها، أما الفصل الثاني: فيتناول أدوات الاستثناء، ومن خلال عرضه لهذه الأدوات أوضح ما جاء فيها من قضايا تركيبية وإعرابية. أما الفصل الثالث فقد خصص لأنماط الاستثناء الثلاثة. وفي الفصل الرابع جاء الكلام عن قضية العامل وعن قضايا تركيبية في الاستثناء، أما المنهج الذي اعتمده المؤلف في هذه الدراسة فإنه يقوم على أساس الاعتماد على ما جاء به النحويون وغيرهم في هذا الباب، وتحليل ذلك ومناقشته لكي يتضح مدى التوافق والتباين في الآراء.
