درس هذا الكتاب الأمثال العربية القديمة بوصفها ثروة غنية تنتمي إلى الموروث العربي، وتصلح لأن نطل، من خلالها، على مناح متنوعة من آداب العرب وعلومهم ومعارفهم، فالأمثال العربية من أقدم الأشكال الفنية واللغوية التي تحمل دلالات حضارية، وأنماط من الوعي المشترك والمعرفة المبكرة، فهي تعكس تطور هذا الوعي وتحولات المجتمع الذي أنتجها وتصوره عن الكون والحياة والإنسان، فضلاً عما تكتنزه من مشاعر وانفعالات في جمل مكثفة موجزة تسري بين الناس فيما يشبه القوانين.
ولقد كانت الأمثال وما تزال موضع اهتمام متعدد، إذ يجد فيها اللغوي الشاهد على كلام العربي، ويجد فيها المؤدب والمعلم سبل التأديب والتعليم، كما يجد فيها القاص ما يحقق غايته ويغني مقصده.
وقد أخذ الكتاب على عاتقه مقاربة المثل وفق مناهج متنوعة، والنظر إليه بصورة شمولية تجمع جوانبه المختلفة، الأسلوبية والسردية والثقافية، لتجلية بعض غوامض هذا النوع الأدبي الحيوي.
