توقفت القوارب عن نقل المسافرين وهدأت حركتها بين الميناء والسفينة ورفع الدرج الخشبي، وما هي إلا دقائق حتى علا الضجيج وصرير الحديد ورفعت مراسي السفينة، وشوهد البحارة بحركة لافتة يذرعون السطح جيئة وذهاباً، ثم عبق الجو بالدخان الأسود المتصاعد من الفوهات والمداخن المرتفعة وازداد الهدير في بطن السفينة، فاهتزت اهتزازات خفيفة وسُمعت جلبة قوية بإيقاع بطيء ما لبثت أن تسارعت ثم انتظمت… وبدأ الشاطئ يبتعد شيئاً فشيئاً ولم يعد يربطه بالسفينة سوى ذلك الخط الأبيض من الموج المائل إلى الزرقة الذي يتشكل من أثر مراوح المحركات البخارية تحت الماء، ليتلاشى فيما بعد بالتدريج. نظر حسن إلى جموع المودعين عند الرصيف المتباعد وخيّل إليه أنه يرى أهله هناك يلوحون له بالمناديل البيضاء، فرفع يده ملوحاً أسوة بكل المسافرين، ولكن الصورة تلاشت مع دموعه، وتلاشى منظر الشاطئ البيروتي حتى أصبح ذؤابة لم تلبث أن اختفت كلياً، واختفت بعدها قمة جبل صنين بثلوجه الناصعة، أما السفينة نفسها فظلت تمخر عباب البحر المتوسط حتى أصبحت نقطة معلقة ما بين الماء والسماء.
