المكان ركن مهم من أركان الرواية، فكل ما فيها من حوادث وشخوص تجري وتتحرك في فضاء هو الإطار الجامع لكل العناصر، لذا توجّه النقد الحديث لدراسته بإعتباره دالاً يساعد على الوصول إلى مدلول أعمق للرواية.
ومن هنا، نشأ ما يعرف بجمالية المكان أو شعرية المكان في الرواية، ويقصد بها أن المكان اكتسب أبعاداً رمزية ودلالية، وأن وصفه يشي بهذه الرموز والدلالات، ويكشف عن الأحاسيس التي تسيطر على الشخصية تجاهه ألفةً أو عداءً.
وقد اختار المؤلفة لدراسة شعرية الأمكنة في روايات (يحيى يخلف) وذلك أن المكان في هذه الروايات له حضور بارز، ومع ذلك لم يستأثر بعناية أي من الدارسين، وأكثر الذين تنازلوا رواياته درسوها بصورة عامة واهتموا بالكشف عن الخطاب الفكري الذي تتضمنه دون تسليط الضوء على ما فيها من الأمكنة، وما توحي به من دلالات.
فالأمكنة في هذه الروايات متعددة، ومختلفة، وكثيراً ما كان الروائي يوظّفها ليوضّح موقفه منها، أو ليوضّح موقفه مما يجري عليها، فأمكنته تجاوزت أبعادها المادية (الجغرافية) وحملت أبعاداً سياسيّة، ونفسيّة، وإجتماعيّة، وفكريّة، وفنية، اتضحت من خلال علاقتها ببقية عناصر الرواية كالشخوص والأحداث.
وإزاء تعدد الأمكنة وتنوعها في أعماله ركّزت الدراسة على تحليل الأمكنة الأكثر حضوراً ودلالة، أي تلك التي قامت بدور فني ودلالي عميق، أما الأمكنة التي لم تشكل عنصراً أساسياً في بناء العمل الروائي فاكتفت الدراسة بالإشارة إليها، والتنبيه عليها من غير توقف طويل.
وتقع الدراسة في تمهيد وثلاثة فصول، أما التمهيد فقد عرض لمفهوم المكان وأهميته في العمل الروائي عامةً، وفي الرواية الفلسطينية على وجه التخصيص، وتناول الفصل الأول الأمكنة المفتوحة التي وظّفت في الروايات، وهي: المدينة، والقرية، والمخيم، والصحراء، والبحيرة، والشارع، والمعسكر، وتناول الفصل الثاني الأمكنة المغلقة، ولا سيما البيت، والخيمة، والفندق، والمقهى، والسجن، والمستشفى، وفي الفصل الثالث تناول المؤلف علاقة المكان بسائر العناصر الروائية ولا سيما الشخصية، والزمان، واللغة، والسرد، والمنظور الروائي.
