حروب وزعماء كلمتان متلازمتان، ترتبط إحداهما بالأخرى. فكم من نزاعاته وخلافات سياسية نتجت عنها أحداث، قد تكون دموية في بعض الأحيان، وكم من أحداث برزت بنتيجتها زعيم أو قائد سياسي. وفي تاريخ أمثلة عديدة في هذا المجال. ولنأخذ مثلاً منها ذلك البريطاني الداهية، السير "ونستون تشرتشل" الذي استطاع بحنكته أن يقود الحلفاء إلى النصر النهائي ودمر القوات النازية في عقر دارها. ومن أبرز ما قام به هو أنه راح بخطاباته يثير الخصال الحسنة في الشعب البريطاني، ويدير فعلياً المجهود الحربي بدءاً من الخطط العسكرية الكبيرة إلى أصغر التفاصيل، وقد قاد شعبه عبر خمس سنوات من المصاعب والخسائر حتى تحقيق النصر. ولولا قيادة هذا السياسي الكبير وحنكته لاستسلم البريطانيون لهتلر. ولما شعر باندحار القوات البريطانية والفرنسية وتراجعها أمام الجحافل الألمانية الغازية، طار إلى الولايات المتحدة الأميركية على وجه السرعة، واستطاع أن يقنع رئيسها فرانكلين روزفلت على دخول الحرب إلى جانب الحلفاء، وتقديم كل عون مادي وعسكري، ومن طريف ما يروى عن هذا السياسي الكبير، أنه عندما كانت أنظار العالم مشدودة نحو قرب غزو هتلر لبريطانيا، وكان هتلر قد أرسل سراً نائبه رودولف هيس ليخبر تشرتشل بأن هتلر لن يهاجم إنكلترا وأنه سيغزو روسيا، وعند اجتماعه برودولف هيس طلب سراً سفير الاتحاد السوفياتي وأجلسه في غرفة مجاورة، بحيث يستطيع سماع ما يدور بينه وبين هيس من حديث. وكانت النتيجة أن أبرق السفير الروسي إلى حكومته بما سمعه، محذراً إياها من غدر هتلر، وقام هو باعتقال هيس وسحبه. وبعد انتهاء الحرب وانتصار الحلفاء حوكم هيس في نورنبرغ وظل المعتقل الوحيد في معسكرات الاعتقال حتى وفاته. ولما سئل تشرتشل عن فعلته هذه قال عبارته الشهيرة "إنني على استعداد لوضع يدي في يد الشيطان في سبيل مصلحة بلادي". نكرر ما ذكرناه في بداية هذه المقدمة، أن السياسة والأحداث كلهما مرتبط بالآخر، وهذا الكتاب سيحاول إعطاء أكبر قدر من المعلومات في هذا المضمار عن عظماء التاريخ وصانعوا الأحداث كما سيلقي الضوء على أهم الأحداث التاريخية والحروب التي هزت العالم كله.
