قد نما الاهتمام بتاريخ العالم نمواً عظيماً في السنوات الأخيرة. فقد قلّص السفر الصاروخي الكرة الأرضية وأصبحت الشعوب أقلّ انحباساً ضمن رقعتها من هذا العالم، منها في أي وقت مضى. وحصلت هجرات كثيرة في المجتمعات ذات الثقافات المتعددة في كل قارة، ونمت لدى مختلف المجموعات العرقية الرغبة في معرفة المزيد عن بعضها البعض. وهناك سبب آخر رئيسي لنمو الرغبة والاهتمام، هو أن الأحداث والتطورات - في أي جزء من العالم، كالحروب والثورات وحركات التجارة والتغييرات في الظروف الاقتصادية - أصبحت تُشاهَد في الحال.,وكتابة تاريخ العالم هي مهمة ضخمة. بدأتُ منذ أكثر من (20) عاماً ، أضيف إليها معلوماتٍ جديدةً إلى جزر المعرفة التي جمعتها بخلال (25) سنة من الدراسة الأكاديمية. في سنة 1980م، تمّ نشر القسم الأول من تاريخ العالم في القرن العشرين لـ كولنز Collins ، يغطّي أوروبا بشكل رئيسي وآسيا والولايات المتحدة من سنة 1900 إلى سنة 1945م، ونشرته دار فونتانا وتمّ الرجوع إليه بعد ذلك بشكل واسع. وبعد ذلك باثنتي عشرة سنة وصلت إلى سنة 1990 فوسّعت المجال بحيث شمل تاريخ إفريقيا وأميركا اللاتينية وجنوبي آسيا . أنا مدين لـ ستيورات بروفيت لتشجيعه ولإيحائه بأن يجب أن يُراجَع وأن العمل يجب - الآن - أن يغطي القرن العشرين في أكثر من مجلد واحد، ودعمه جعل تحقيق تصوري الأول ممكناً.
