هامشية المرأة عاطفياً وروحياً وأخلاقياً في مجتمع ذكوري هو المجال الذي تدور حوله رواية «كيمياء الخيبة» للكاتبة السعودية "إيمان الخطاف"، عبر دائرة أسلوبية تأبى إلاَّ أن تكون وفية للنسق الذهني والثقافي الأشمل الذي شكل مجتمع عربي بعينه، ليأتي العنوان الثاني للرواية "امرأة "نفطيّة" تشعر أن الحياة تفوتها" بمثابة الدليل لقراءة النص الروائي بطريقة غير مباشرة، وعلامة وسيطة، قادرة على توجيه القراءة وتنظيم صيرورة الأحداث في ذهن المتلقي لاحقاً.
بطلة الرواية هي "خولة" امرأة مبعثرة، نخلها الوقت والزمن، لم تعش حياتها كما يجب، بلغت السابعة والأربعين وتعيش أزمة منتصف العمر، متزوجة من منصور رجل تقليدي حرمَّها العمل ومتابعة دراساتها العليا على الرغم من تفوقها؛ وحولها إلى "ربة منزل" وأم لفتاتين "فاتن" و"ليلى" اعتنت بهما كما يجب لأمٍ أن تعتني بأبنائها، ولكن بعد مضي سني العمر أستفاقت خولة على واقع؛ إن الزوج لم يكن الزوج الذي أرادت، والإبنتين ليستا الابنتين اللتين حلمت يوماً بانجابهما، وأنها أضاعت سنوات شبابها سجينة الوقار والحياء والعيب. وبهذا المعنى فإن "كيميَّاء الخيَّبة" رواية يتم التركيز فيها على المسائل ذات العلاقة بخصوصية المرأة، المرأة التي تحلم برجل يشاركها كل مفاصل حياتها باعتبارها نداً مساوياً للآخر في كل شيء، وكياناً حراً له من المطالب والحقوق ما للآخر من مطالب وحقوق، تبحث عن الحب، والرومانسية، ولا تنتظر الخيانة وصك الطلاق.
