هذه الدراسة قراءة تحليلية نقدية، اتخذت موضوعاً لها الخطاب النقدي العروي، وهو من أوائل الخطابات الفكرية النقدية في الفكر العربي المعاصر، التي أنتجت في النصف الثاني من القرن العشرين.
ليس من أهدافنا حصر جميع الدراسات السابقة التي تناولت الخطاب موضوع دراستنا هذه بالنقد، ونشرت في شكل (مقالات في صحف، ومجلات، وفصول في بعض الكتب)، ولا الرد عليها، وإنما سنكتفي بتصنيف تلك الدراسات حسب الهدف الذي رمت إلى تحقيقه، لقد رمى بعضها إلى تحليل مفهوم أو أكثر في الخطاب المدروس ونقده، بينما قام بعضها الآخر بمحورة الخطاب العروي في محاور معينة، وتابع تطورها فيما انتجه، مبرزاً التناقض بين بعض أطروحاته.
