يعرض فادي إسماعيل من خلال هذا الكتاب مفاهيم "الحداثة والتنمية وبناء الدولة والأمة" في جزء هام من أجزاء الفترة التي أعقبت ما عرف بـ"الاستقلال" وهي الفترة الواقعة (1978-1987م) وقد تناول فيها مجموعة الانحرافات الفكرية والثقافية والسياسية والاقتصادية والاجتماعية التي تمت ممارستها من قبل النخب الاجتماعية التي تسلمت من الغرب-بعد الاستقلال-زمام أمور هذه الأمة فأوجدت واقعاً عربياً ممسوخاً مشوهاً قلقاً مضطرباً لا يمكن الدفاع عن أي جزء من أجزائه.
يحاول فادي إسماعيل على ضوء هذه المعطيات أن يصور جملة من النتائج المأساوية التي نجمت عن هذا المشروع على مستوى النظم وعلى مستوى الإنسان والمجتمع، وقد عمد إلى ذلك من خلال قراءته النقدية لهذه المفاهيم بعملية كشف مزدوج عن خداع هذه المفاهيم وعن بعض الآثار السلبية التي نجمت عنها.
