يعد كتاب "التدوين في أخبار قزوين" تحفة تاريخية نادرة في أخبار البلدان تعود إلى القرن السادس عشر الميلادي، وهو العصر الذي عاش فيه المؤرخ الكبير عبد الكريم بن محمد الرافعي القزويني، الذي نقل إلينا بين طيات الكتاب أخبار "الملوك والسادات والحروب والغزوات ونبأ البلدان وفتوحها والحوادث العامة كالأسعار والأمطار، والصواعق، والبوائق، والنوازل والزلازل، والإنتقال للدول، وتبدل الملل والنحل، وأحوال أكابر الناس والمواليد والإملاكات والتهاني والتعازي وما يجري مجراها". بهذه اللغة جاء الكتاب ليروي تاريخ قزوين وأعلامها وأحوالهم من قضاة ورؤساء وولاة وأهل مقامات شريفة، وسير محمودة عن حياتهم وطرفاً من مقالاتهم ورواياتهم ومشائخهم بما فيهم علماء الحديث، حيث يحضر في الكتاب إبن نمير وأحمد بن حنبل ويحي بن معين وعلي بن المديني، وتاريخ محمد إبن إسماعيل البخاري، وإبن ابي حاتم في الجرح والتعديل. وكل ما يختص بتواريخ البلدان التي جاءت في كتب معروفة كتواريخ بغداد للحافظ أبي بكر الخطيب وغيره وتاريخ مصر لأبي سعد بن يونس، وواسط، لأسلم إبن سهل و "أصبهان" لأبي بكر إبن مردوية، وإبن مندة، و "همدان" لصالح بن أحمد الحافظ وغيرهما.
وبناءً على ما تقدم جاء الكتاب في أربعة فصول، أولها في "فضائل البلدة وخصائصها" ، وثانيها في "إسمها" وثالثها في "كيفية بنائها وفتحها" ، ورابعها في "نواحيها وأوديتها وقنيها ومساجدها ومقابرها" كما أتبع المؤلف الفصول بذكر من وردها من الصحابة والتابعين رضي الله عنهم أجمعين، وتسمية من بعدهم من شرفاء وعلماء وشيوخ مسلمين.
