يأتي هذا الكتاب من ضمن سلسلة الخزانة التاريخية في الإسماعيليين والدّروُز ويسلط مؤلفه سليم حسن هشي الضوء على الحركة الإسماعيلية من الناحية العقائدية والتاريخية، وذلك بالإستناد إلى أهم المصادر التاريخية التي بحثت في هذا الباب والغاية هي المساهمة في تعريف العالم على هذه الفرقة الشيعية الإسلامية؛ وإلقاء الضوء عليها خلال مختلف العصور؛ ولأن الفرقة الإسماعيلية تعرضت للإنشقاق خلال تطورها - كما يذكر المؤلف - نتيجة ظروف سياسية وعقائدية مختلفة.
لذلك، تتركز دراسته على الفرقة الإسماعيلية النزارية، أما الحركات التي انبثقت عن الإسماعيلية كالدرزية والإسماعيلية المستعلية لم تهملها هذه الدراسة بل تناولتها بشكل مختصر.
وفي هذا السياق يقدم المؤلف تحليلاً للظروف التاريخية التي ظهرت فيها الإسماعيلية بدءاً من عهد الإمام إسماعيل بن جعفر الصادق، وحتى وفاته وما لاقته الحركات الشيعية عامة والحركات الإسماعيلية خاصة من الإضطهاد والتشريد والمطاردة من قبل خلفاء بني العباس، ثم عملية إنتقال الدعوة من سلمية في سورية إلى المهدية في تونس وكيف نشطت هناك وقويت حتى أصبح بإمكانها الإمتداد شرقاً وغرباً في مصر والحجاز واليمن والشام.
يتألف الكتاب من ثمانية عشر فصلاً تناولت الحركة الإسماعيلية منذ النشأة وحتى العصر الحاضر ومن عناوينها نذكر: 1-الإسماعيلية نشأتها، وتاريخها، 2-الدولة الفاطمية، 3-العقيدة الإسماعيلية، 4-الإسماعيلية النزارية، 5-فتوحات الإسماعيلية في فارس، 6-حالة بلاد الشام في عهد الدولة النزارية، 7-نضال الإسماعيلية من أجل المدن... وعناوين أخرى ذات صلة.
