يقدم هذا الكتاب دراسة تحليلية للتاريخ الفكري والسياسي لدولتي الإسماعيلية في اليمن... موجز في بدايته أصل التشيع في التاريخ الإسلامي، ومن ثم يفصل تاريخ نشأة الفرق الشيعية الإمامية: الزيدية والاثنى عشرية والإسماعيلية ثم يستعرض تاريخ اليمن السياسي والفكري قبل دخول المذهب الإسماعيلي، عندما كانت اليمن تخضع لقوى ثلاث: الزياديون المناخيون واليعفريون. كما يتناول بداية قدوم دعاة الإسماعيلية، وكيف تسنى لهم نشر الدعوة باليمن ومن ثمّ تأسيس الدولة الأولى هناك. ويأتي بالشرح على قيام الدولة الإسماعيلية الثانية، التي عرفها المؤرخون بالدول الصليحية، فيذكر ظروف قيامها وأسباب سقوطها، الذي يرجع أساساً إلى الاختلاف الاستراتيجي والأيديولوجي بين دعاة الإسماعيلية أنفسهم آنذاك، الأمر الذي أدّى إلى صراع الأتباع، فكان التفكك بعد ذلك والشتات والضياع، مما حتّم عليهم الدخول بدور الستر وممارسة التقية مرة أخرى. والكتاب هو الأول من سلسلة البحوث والدراسات الإسماعيلية التي يقوم المؤلف بإصدارها تباعاً. والأمل من هذه البحوث والدراسات أن تواكب، ونحن على أبواب الألفية الثالثة، روح العصر بما يحمل من الانفتاح الفكري والتواصل الأممي والتسامح الديني.
