"تفكر كثيراً أن تلتفت إلى الوراء حيث الزمن يقف متعجرفاً يبدو كل شيء، لكنك تتوجس وكشجرة هرمة توغل في انحدارات العمر، تطوف الحواري وتجوب الأزقة، ترى ما تعجز عين عن حفظه وتبقى الكلمات أطياف حزن تضمحل. قالوا: البيوت تفرق في حكام سكتت الدبابات والبوقات. لف المدينة غبار أسود. ترى أسقف المباني يكشط الرماد ملامحها المتعرجة وانسحاق الخلق نحو الأسواق وملء الأفئدة شكاوي حزينة. يصيخون السمع معاً، طيور حبيسة يفيض صوتها بشجن الوجع والغربة والوطن أو بنات آوى تتشح بغياب. من داخل صوت "الكرخ" تسمع ما يضجون به. يدنو منك محمد التهامي بحذر: "هؤلاء الأغراب تغلغل نفوذهم وما عاد بإمكان الخليفة أن يأمن على نفسه من غدرهم أتاح لهم فرصة الصعود حتى باتوا أكثر تنفذاً منه". (كثير الادعاء بمعرفة خبايا الأمور هذا التهامي!). "وكيف تعرف ما يدور بينهم والخليفة؟". "همس! لا ترفع صوتك فالجدران هنا بآذان: منذ أن جاءت أصولهم زمن المعتصم... ألم يكن أول من استعان بهم؟... جبابرة ابتلت بهم الديار يا صاح!" يسري الحذر في عروقك. ذاكرتك موشومة بلحظة الهروب من أي استرسال تنصت إلى ما يقوله. أنت تعرف ذلك وتعرف أكثر منه. انعصار قلبك يبعدك عن التوغل بعيداً. لا فائدة من قول شيء. الأمور تسير من سيئ إلى أسوأ. همس! لا ترفع صوتك! على المرء أن لا يثق كثيراً بما حوله". في فضاء العصر العباسي الثاني (232-447هـ، 847-1055م) تدور تحولات الفارسي الغريب يطل الوقت برأسه الشائخ ويسحب نفساً عميقاً زاخراً، ويخلد الغراب في العتمة الخالدة. من هناك يجيء الفارس، على فرس من سحاب، رهواناً يفتك بكل شيء. ليس للحكايات وقت ولا للزمان الرمادي وجه تداخلت كلها في تحولات الفارس الغريب في البلاد الهاربة وتحدث حكاية كل الأزمنة الهاربة، وكل الفراس الغريبة.
